The 2023 Emmys red carpet was a mixed bag when it came to fashion. While some stars stunned in gorgeous gowns and sharp suits, others missed the mark completely with their questionable and downright wacky outfit choices. As Joan Rivers would say, “Oh no she di’int!”
Kicking things off was TikTok star Emma Brooks McCallister who made it clear she didn’t bother squeezing into a glam gown like the other celebs. Instead, she went the crafty route and just spray-painted some abs onto a leotard. Paired with a sheer sheet around her waist acting as a skirt? Let’s just say the fashion police would not approve.
Samantha Hanratty also went for a quirky DIY approach to her Emmys look. Her lacy white dress seemed to be an old doll covering pulled straight off her grandma’s toilet paper stash. The unfinished look was apparently a design collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana no less! Someone please get fired.
In an apparent nod to her hit show “The White Lotus,” Aubrey Plaza wore a half-finished yellow gown by Spanish label Loewe. The bottom was a flowing satin while the top looked like a folded fabric square held together by a giant safety pin. Plaza didn’t seem to mind, but the fashion police would definitely be screaming “bring me the manager!” over this one.
Meanwhile, Tyler James Williams felt brave enough to attempt the challenging double leather suit look. And without an undershirt, too! While bold, the head-to-toe leather ended up looking less retro cool and more sticky and sweaty situation. Here’s a memo: leather suits died in 2001 for a reason.
Channeling her inner Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” was Natasha Lyonne in a see-through silver gown. With shells from the craft store spray-painted silver and stuck over her chest to preserve some modesty. While playful, King Triton definitely would have told his daughter, “Not at the Emmys, young lady!”
Ali Wong looked like she raided the Louis Vuitton workshop floor for leftover fabrics and then hastily stitched them together. The result? An odd blue floral skirt paired with a sparkly sequined bustier and mesh top hybrid. Sacre bleu!
Rifling through the vintage Dior archives backfired terribly for Kathryn Hahn. She ended up in a tattered “Little House on the Prairie” day dress and lace skirt combo that looked like it would disintegrate if she breathed too hard. Certainly not what Paris couture dreams are made of!
In a move that can only be described as utterly wacky, Lisa Ann Walter decided to hack together three different outfits into one crazy patchwork creation. With pieces of a tuxedo, wetsuit, and parachute fabric all chaotically stitched together, it was a hot mess express coming through! All aboard to the Fashion Disaster Station!
Last but not least, a wrinkled pink dress paired with clashing tan heels was Quinta Brunson’s attempt at “old school glam.” While her heart was likely in the right place, the execution missed the bar by a mile. Ironing boards exist for a reason, folks!
After bearing witness to all the fashion faux pas on display, one can easily assume the ghost of Joan Rivers was likely having a field day heckling celebs from the great beyond. Here’s hoping some stars schedule an emergency fashion intervention with Carson Kressley before next awards season rolls around! The fashion police can only handle so much.
