Sarah Johnson went from struggling with mental health issues in early adulthood to becoming an advocate who helps others
Growing up, Sarah Johnson seemed to have it all – a loving family, opportunities to develop her talents, and bright prospects for the future. However, underneath the surface, Sarah grappled with feelings of anxiety and depression that made it difficult for her to appreciate all the good things in her life. Through perseverance and the support of those around her, Sarah overcame life’s challenges and found purpose and joy by helping others facing similar struggles.
Early Signs of Inner Turmoil
Even as a child, Sarah recalls feeling somehow disconnected from the excitement and happiness her peers seemed to experience so effortlessly. In high school, she drowned her discomfort in academic and extracurricular achievements, earning top grades and lead roles in school plays. “I thought that if I just kept pushing myself harder, the sadness would go away,” she says.
Sarah’s mother, a nurse, recognized the signs of depression in her daughter and had an honest talk with her. She explained that mental health issues can be hereditary and encouraged Sarah to seek help if her symptoms persisted or worsened. Though relieved to have a name for her suffering, Sarah kept it private and resolved to tough it out on her own.
The Move that Changed Everything
After high school, Sarah left her hometown of Detroit to attend NYU’s prestigious musical theatre program in New York City. On paper, it was a dream come true – she was living on her own for the first time in the vibrant Big Apple as an 18 year old.
“By all accounts, I should have been over the moon,” Sarah recalls. “But that persistent cloud of gloom and doom followed me there.” She had difficulty getting out of bed in the mornings, much less participating in school activities that once brought her joy.
“I’d be lying in the dorm common room, listening to my friends chat excitedly about their auditions and performances while I stared numbly at the ceiling,” says Sarah. “Inside, I kept thinking ‘What is WRONG with me? Why can’t I just be happy?’”

The Turning Point
The breaking point came when Sarah completely bombed an important audition. As she fled the room in tears, she heard a classmate snickering, “What a basket case!” Those words cut deep and Sarah knew she had to make a change.
She called her mother, who helped Sarah make an appointment with the campus counselor. Though the counseling process proved challenging at times, Sarah found it immensely relieving to speak openly about her mental health struggles. She also met with a campus psychiatrist who prescribed anti-anxiety medication to help balance Sarah’s brain chemistry.
Equipped with various coping strategies, the clouds finally began lifting for Sarah. She discovered she had the power to minimize anxious thoughts through breathing exercises, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and limiting self-criticism. “I stopped constantly comparing myself to other people and realized we all have our own journey,” she says.
Helping Others Find Their Voice
Since overcoming depression, Sarah has dedicated herself to raising mental health awareness, especially among young people. She speaks at high schools and universities about her experiences and the importance of self-care.
“So many teenagers struggling with depression and anxiety suffer silently because they feel ashamed or worry that no one will understand,” she says. “I let them know that what they’re going through is more common than they think. There is light at the end of the tunnel.”
When Sarah meets former fans who share how her honesty has helped them, she gets a little teary-eyed. “Those moments make all my struggles worthwhile and give me a sense of purpose,” she says. “Life isn’t perfect, but it sure has its bright spots!”

What’s Next
Now at 40, Sarah’s outlook grows a little brighter every day. Recently married and excited to start a family soon, her infectious smile gives little hint of the inner turmoil she once endured.
“With support from loved ones and my own hard work, I’ve made peace with my anxiety,” says Sarah. “It will always be a part of me, but it no longer defines me.”
She continues using her powerful story to provide hope to others experiencing mental health issues or life’s painful obstacles. Sarah’s whirlwind journey proves that with perseverance and help when needed, it’s possible for absolutely anyone to thrive.
