Early Life in Barbados
Rihanna, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, grew up in less than glamorous conditions in Saint Michael, Barbados. Her childhood was marked by hardship – her father struggled with alcoholism and was abusive, causing Rihanna’s parents to ultimately divorce when she was 14.
Rihanna recalls, “I’ve been working since the age of 15. That’s when I got my first job at a clothing store.” Between working and school, singing was an outlet of joy. Little did she know where it would take her.
Discovered by an American Producer
In 2003, while American record producer Evan Rogers was on vacation in Barbados with his wife, he happened to meet Rihanna. Blown away by her voice, Evan invited Rihanna to record some demo tracks in the United States.
“I walked into the studio and saw this sweet little girl, and I was like, ‘Yup, she’s the one,’” Rogers said. “She had such a unique tone and sound.”
At 16, a shy Rihanna traveled to Connecticut to stay with Rogers and his family and record a collection of demo tracks. “I was in a new country by myself. I didn’t have any friends. I was basically just going to school and back to the hotel,” she recalls. “So it was music, school and hotel. I didn’t do anything else.”
Caught By Jay-Z and Signing to Def Jam
Rihanna’s demos captured the attention of rapper Jay-Z, who was then president of Def Jam Recordings. “There was no way to deny her talent,” Jay-Z later said. Rihanna auditioned for Jay-Z, who signed her on the spot in 2005.
She recalls, “When we first got signed, they were talking about the album coming out maybe eight months later. Two months later, we dropped the [first] single and we shot the video at director Aaron Platt’s house in L.A. Then, four months later I had an album out. It was so fast-paced and nonstop.”
Meteoric Rise with ‘Pon de Replay’
Rihanna’s debut single, “Pon de Replay,” quickly became a club hit and launched Rihanna’s meteoric rise to fame. Her debut album Music of the Sun was released in 2005, selling over 2 million copies worldwide.
“Pon De Replay was seismic,” Jay Brown, Rihanna’s manager, recalls. “I don’t know if it’s because there was a gap in the market place at the time, but I remember thinking, ‘Oh lord, here we go…’ From day one, she captured the imagination.”
Global Domination
Over the next few years Rihanna released hit album after hit album, including A Girl Like Me (2006), Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) and Rated R (2009). Songs like “SOS,” “Umbrella,” and “Only Girl (In the World)“ ruled the charts.
“I was nonstop working for three years; doing three albums, and promoting back-to-back cycles nonstop,” Rihanna said. “When I realized I was on the verge of burning out, I took control of my schedule.”
By her mid-20s, Rihanna had become one of the best-selling music artists ever, with over 250 million records sold worldwide. Forbes named her one of the most powerful celebrities and Time named her one of the most influential people in the world.
Venturing into Business
In 2017, Rihanna launched the cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty. With its inclusive message and extensive shade ranges, Fenty instantly disrupted the beauty industry. In its first month, Fenty made over $100 million. Forbes called it “one of the biggest solo beauty brand launches in history.”
“I’ve been slowly evolving throughout the fashion world,” Rihanna said. “First wearing it, buying it, being recognized for my style and then collaborating with brands. I never just wanted to put my name on something and sell my license.”
Rihanna also co-owns the Savage X Fenty lingerie brand and starred in blockbuster movies like Ocean’s 8. She’s expanded her music career by signing artists to her Westbury Road label.
Giving Back
Despite her immense success, Rihanna remains grounded and hasn’t forgotten her roots. She founded the Clara Lionel Foundation to support global education and emergency response.
“It’s important for every business nowadays to have a charitable component,” she said. “The world needs it. The world is crying out for help. We all see it every day…if you’re in a position to help, you should.”
The Icon Today
Now only in her 30s, Rihanna has built a $1.7 billion net worth, making her one of the wealthiest entertainers on the planet. She is Barbados’ first billionaire.
From humble beginnings, she’s transformed into a fashion icon, music legend, beauty mogul, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. Despite all her success, she’s still the same grateful island girl who started singing for fun as a kid in Barbados.
“I never thought I’d make this much money, so a number is not going to stop me from working,” Rihanna asserts. “Money is happening along the way, but I’m working out of what I love to do, what I’m passionate about.”
Rihanna’s story shows that where there’s a will, there’s a way. She proves people can rise above difficult circumstances through resilience and hard work. All dreams are possible for those bold enough to pursue them.
